Now that marijuana is legal for medical and recreational use in most of the country, there are so many different types of cannabis products that are available. One of the most popular, convenient, inconspicuous, and enjoyable ways to ingest cannabis is through edibles.

While it is always fun to go to your favorite dispensary and check out what delicious weed-infused treats they have to offer, they can only provide a limited variety of items. There will be times that you might not be in the mood to eat a gummy bear, cookie, Rice Krispies treats, brownies or other edible from a dispensary, but still want the intense medical benefits and psychoactive effect (high) of eating cannabis.

So, the question is — is there any way to infuse weed into other food items? And the answer is — YES! All you need to do is start making marijuana butter of your own! We will walk you through how to make cannabutter below.

  • Marijuana buds or trim

Three-step weed butter recipe

  • Decarboxylate the Marijuana

While many think that this step is unnecessary, decarboxylating your weed will activate all the cannabinoids in the plant mass to make your cannabis butter as potent as possible. You will first want to break up the trim or buds thoroughly.

Feel free to use a marijuana grinder or even a food processor to do so. Pre-heat the oven to roughly 260 degrees. Spread the broken down cannabis material evenly over the baking pan as the oven gets ready. Then put the baking pan and cannabis into the preheated oven for 45 minutes.

  • Boil the Weed Butter

Take out the baking pan and fill the boiling pot about 25 to 35 percent full of decarboxylated cannabis. Then pour water and butter into the pot until it is about 80 percent full. Keep in mind that you want about a 4 to 1 ratio of water to butter for the entire process to be finished properly.

Bring this mixture to a boil and let it stay in this state for at least four hours. Make sure you keep stirring the mix at least every 10 to 20 minutes and add water (as it evaporates) so that nothing burns. Also, keep in mind that this step will produce extremely strong cannabis odors.

  • Strain the Weed Butter

Pour the mixture carefully into the potato ricer in controllable increments and use it to strain out the plant matter from the liquid weed butter mix. Use the collecting bowl to catch all of the falling liquid.

Once done straining, let this cannabutter and water mixture cool off for about 45 minutes. Then place it into a refrigerator overnight to allow the weed butter to separate from the water. When you check on it in the morning, the weed butter will have risen to the top and hardened. This will allow you to remove it by hand.

Pour out the water and scrape off any unsightly bits on the bottom of the butter. Now, this cannabutter is ready for use or storage. You can store it safely in the fridge. If you want to save it for several months, you can even use a freezer.

Now that you have a weed butter recipe under your belt, you can use it in with almost any meal. Just go ahead and replace the oil/butter that your meal calls for with your cannabutter. You can also drizzle some of your weed butter on top of your food!
